The name Allegria (pronounced ah-lay-gree-yah) derives from the Spanish greeting “happiness to all”. This lively Newport-based band have become a main topic of conversation at every venue they have played. Famed for their personal interpretation of gypsy music, Allegria consist of founder member Nico Pucacco, whose true passion started with flamenco guitar style and classical romance but then encompassed Django Reinhardt, lead guitarist Hywel Maggs, composer, producer and performer, whose freely improvised yet precise harmonious technique matches melody with elegance and emotion, and Dave Evans ‘The Doc’, who provides rhythm and energy on his contrabass.
Whether you are a fan of swing jazz or a lover of Latino dance, the versatility and homogenous elegance of these musicians will make their appearance at the 2009 Admiral Mumbles Mostly Jazz and Blues Festival a memorable encounter for all.
