Exciting trumpet-led jazz quintet…
Where: Con Club
When: Sunday 3rd May
Time: 4.15–6.30pm
Gethin Liddington studied classical trumpet at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Cardiff, with Terry Lax from 1989 to 1993. He is one of that new breed, equally at home with soul and dance music as with jazz, from trad to free improvisation. As well as pursuing these interests in a freelance capacity and teaching regularly, he runs his own quartet and features in a number of notable big bands. These include the Paul Dunmall Octet (with whom he has recorded two CDs, a Radio 3 broadcast and toured Britain), Ultrasound (with whom Gethin plays lead trumpet) and Keith Tippet’s Tapestry (lead trumpet again), where Gethin played alongside Lee Goodall during the band’s British tour and Radio 3 broadcast.
He has also played in numerous bands and ensembles including the Charlie Barber Band, an Ellington tribute with Loren Schoenberg and Scott Hamilton, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra and the Back to Basie Orchestra. Gethin’s approach has been described as a “big beefy sound with supreme command of the high register”.
“Liddington is something of a revelation; very much in the jazz tradition, he creates melodic lines of genuine freshness and flamboyance.” Bruce Coates
