THE YEAR OF WOMEN IN BLUES AND JAZZ
Serbian-born, Netherlands-based Ana Popovic can be described by a single word: “smoky”. The electric singer takes sex, pain, soul and fury and blends them into a raucous offering, which channels in equal parts Bette Midler and Joss Stone.
Where: Festival Pavilion
When: Saturday 1st May
Time: 9.45–11.30pm (following Earl Thomas & The Kings of Rhythm, 7.30–9.15pm)
Ana Popovic’s father first introduced her to the blues through an extensive record collection and sessions hosted at the family home. Ana founded her first serious band at the age of 19. Within a year, she was playing outside of Yugoslavia and opening shows for American blues icons like Junior Wells. By 1998, her band was doing 100 shows annually and appearing regularly on Yugoslavian television. In 1999 she relocated to the Netherlands to study jazz guitar and quickly became a fixture on the Dutch blues scene and neighbouring Germany.
Since then she has toured extensively around the club and festival circuit both in Europe and the U.S. and Canada, winning numerous prestigious awards and nominations. Her fifth album ‘Still Making History’ reached no. 4 in the U.S. Billboard Blues Chart.
Ana and her European band have twice been invited to play at the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise. On the high seas Ana has jammed with the likes of Susan Tedeschi, Larry McCray, Bob Margolin and many others. She is also part of Robert Radler’s guitar documentary ‘Turn it up’, about the world’s best guitars and guitar players.
“If you’re in the market for some gritty blues-weathered jazz, chances are very likely that you have heard of Ana Popovic before. The Serbian beauty has been in demand to perform at summer jazz festivals around the world since the release of her 2007 record, ‘Still Making History’... Popovic blazes a trail that is entirely of her own making... Her guitar playing reinforces the slogan, “Girls Rock”... Popovic scratches every itch that blues fans have, using the right amount of pressure and tenderizing strokes.” Susan Frances, JazzTimes Magazine, U.S.A., 2009
